Picasso's Guernica in 3D

Architecture Gallery 119 (Southern Illinois University, Quigley Hall, 875 Normal Ave.)
Guernica was painted by Pablo Picasso in response to the Spanish Nationalist forces bombing of the Basque Country village in northern Spain during the Spanish Civil War. Picasso's art reveals the collateral damage inflicted upon innocent civilians caught up in the conflicts of war. Year ONE architecture and interior design students under the direction of Peter b Smith, NCARB architect: Associate Professor School of Architecture: SIUC have recreated this monumental masterpiece as a 3d freehanging 16' x 9' construct.

Donaldson Correctional Facility in Alabama houses 1,500 men considered the state's most dangerous prisoners. Behind the barbed electrical fences, a spark was ignited. A growing network of men had been gathering to meditate on a regular basis. These prisoners, thirsty for meaningful social and emotional change, challenge assumptions about the very nature of prisons as places of punishment rather than rehabilitation. Discussion hosted by Marion Federal Prison Dhamma Volunteers and The North America Vipassana Prison Trust.

In November 1970, university, state and local police shot 778 Bullets into a rental house in Carbondale, IL where some residents were assumed to be associated with the local Black Panther Party. Using archive material, newspaper accounts, witness testimony and experts in the field, 778 Bullets recovers this little known local history in the struggle for civil rights. Film and community discussion with the film's Director Angela Aguayo. View film trailer.
This documentary is part of the Rural Civil Rights Project.

Children from Carbondale Park District Kids Korner program will create a gigantic peace crane. The children will be inside the crane using the magic of kid energy to “ fly” the beautiful crane around the park. The children will also distribute origami cranes to those lucky enough to join them at the park.

With refreshments and entertainment (from Loose Gravel and BGCC children), this culminating 11 Days for Peace event serves three purposes: to present the Hugh Muldoon Peacemaker Award to recipient Hugh Muldoon; to generate enthusiasm for an official Compassionate Cities Campaign in Carbondale; and to recognize the Carbondale Human Relations Commission, Nonviolent Carbondale participants and the entire community for their contributions to the 2012 11 Days for Compassion, which resulted in an ALA Excellence in Library Programming Award to the Carbondale Public Library. That honor belongs to everyone involved with the program's 35+ events. The $5,000 award has been earmarked for future peace and compassion themed initiatives.

Celebrate the 68th Anniversary of the United Nations. In 1947, two years after ratifying the UN Charter, the UN General Assembly adopted a U.S.-sponsored resolution declaring October 24 United Nations Day. Since then, UN Day has been observed in countries large and small around the world, and each U.S. president has issued an annual proclamation asking citizens to observe UN Day, and to reflect upon the importance of the UN to America's national interest. One of 120 events hosted by UNA-USA Chapters across the country, the programs focuses on how vital the UN is to people across the globe. Speaker from the United Nations Foundation TBA.

Children from Carbondale Park District Kids Korner program will create a gigantic peace crane. The children will be inside the crane using the magic of kid energy to “ fly” the beautiful crane around the park. The children will also distribute origami cranes to those lucky enough to join them at the park.

Peace & Compassion Reception

With refreshments and entertainment (from Loose Gravel and BGCC children), this culminating 11 Days for Peace event serves three purposes: to present the Hugh Muldoon Peacemaker Award to recipient Hugh Muldoon; to generate enthusiasm for an official Compassionate Cities Campaign in Carbondale; and to recognize the Carbondale Human Relations Commission, Nonviolent Carbondale participants and the entire community for their contributions to the 2012 11 Days for Compassion, which resulted in an ALA Excellence in Library Programming Award to the Carbondale Public Library. That honor belongs to everyone involved with the program's 35+ events. The $5,000 award has been earmarked for future peace and compassion themed initiatives.

UN Day celebration: Why the United Nations Matters in 2013

Celebrate the 68th Anniversary of the United Nations. In 1947, two years after ratifying the UN Charter, the UN General Assembly adopted a U.S.-sponsored resolution declaring October 24 United Nations Day. Since then, UN Day has been observed in countries large and small around the world, and each U.S. president has issued an annual proclamation asking citizens to observe UN Day, and to reflect upon the importance of the UN to America's national interest. One of 120 events hosted by UNA-USA Chapters across the country, the programs focuses on how vital the UN is to people across the globe. Speaker from the United Nations Foundation TBA.
